I welcome you to Grenville School. As an academic in England, I came to realise many years ago that in a fast-changing and insecure world we all need a stabilising element in our lives in order to make sense of the resulting chaos. That stabilising element I came to realise cannot be developed in adulthood but during our adolescent period when we tend to absorb core values and begin to build an everlasting character imprint.
I joined Grenville because I believe the school to be in tune with my whole philosophy and way of life. It is a school that wishes to make an impact in the society within which it operates but in ways that will benefit the wider populace. It not by accident that we chose the British curriculum but by design because we believe that despite its dwindling powers, Britain has an all-rounded education that will ensure that our children are able to compete and be amongst the best in the world. Go to any American institution, including Harvard and MIT, and you will find that some of the finest brains in these institutions where educated in England.
Another factor in choosing Grenville lies in its emphasis on character and moral values in a world beset by wars and misunderstandings. Through our children, we can make a difference in so far as they will be guided by values that places the concern of the other on-top of their decision making process. It is for this reason that we have placed character and the development of moral and ethical values as integral part of our curriculum delivery.
Education at this level should also be about inculcating life-long values. Some of these come from closeness to our teachers and from knowing that every one counts. It is for this reason that we have a policy of keeping our class sizes small in order to ensure that each child is treated as an individual. Where needed extra classes are provided to ensure that the child is not left behind but is also able to attain the very best possible set of results. Importantly, teachers are reminded daily of their enormous responsibilities and the need to ensure that they act as good role models. Class discipline and timeliness are some of the other values that teachers are encouraged to inculcate on a daily basis.
The introduction of boarding facilities will add a new dimension to our school as we will expose our children to other cultures and ways of thinking. At a time when Nigeria faces so many challenges, there is nothing more encouraging than to know that our children would have learnt an important lesson in their lives: disagreeing with our views does not make the other an enemy. This broad perspective will be one of the benefits of this newly added facility as we expect some of our children to come from both within and outside of Nigeria.
In coming to Grenville, you will have ensured that your child is provided with the enablers for living a good and productive life. As our motto makes clear, the future role they take would have started in these early years spent with us as they are imbibed with values that promote both leadership and fellowship. I say without prevarication, the future of our children is clearly marked as they occupy their true vocation in life.
I welcome you to Grenville and I want to assure parents that our staff are accessible and available to you at any time that is convenient for you to ask further questions and to obtain more specific information, where required.
